The New York Nut Growers Association announces that their 2024 Fall Meeting will take place Oct. 19 at Whallonsburg Grange Hall, 1610 NY-22, Essex, NY.

The main program will take place in the morning at the Grange Hall. Breakfast starts at 8:30 a.m., and the program begins at 9 a.m. Among the topics discussed in the morning will be growing hazelnuts and English walnuts; creating Adirondack food system resilience; dealing with flooding and drought; grant writing ideas; control of walnut diseases and pests; and seed nut stratification (giving nuts a head-start for planting next spring).

Experienced NYNGA orchardists, nursery operators and staff members of the Essex County Soil & Water Conservation District will be a part of a panel to answer questions.

After lunch, we’ll head out to Barred Owl Brook Farm, 735 Lakeshore Rd., Essex. The primary focus of the owners, Alex Caskey and Audrey Crocker, is to provide fellow producers with high quality genetic inputs for agroforestry production systems in the form of quality tree crop nursery stock and Katahdin hair sheep breeding stock selected for performance in a silvopasture system, where tree fodder comprises a portion of their diet during the grazing season.

A light breakfast and lunch are included in the cost of meeting registration, which is $18 for members and $23 for non-members. Pre-registration is required to facilitate meal planning.
