go-mr-wad-23-1-seven-springs-farm11Why farm organically? Not using toxic pesticides and chemical fertilizers in the production of food is a much healthier choice for people and the environment. Organic production helps build healthy soil, since it promotes replacing the nutrients plants use while growing. Growing organically preserves diversity in our environment, and provides us with the best quality food. Organic gardening takes into account nature’s multifaceted systems including soil, water supply, people, wildlife, and even insects. An organic gardener strives to work in harmony with natural systems and continually replenish any resources the garden consumes. By growing organically we are changing the world in a positive way.
This is why Ron Juftes and Polly Hieser left their landscaping and tree service business in Pennsylvania, and moved to Floyd County, Virginia to start the area’s first organic CSA in 1991. Ron and Polly are both trained horticulturalists with many years of experience. They bought 111 acres of beautiful rolling countryside and established Seven Springs Farm. In 1994 they started the Organic Farming and Gardening Products retail store on the farm, where soil amendments and organic pest control products were sold to local farmers. The CSA is now run by Polly and the Organic Farming and Gardening Supply is run by Ron.
The Organic Farming and Gardening Supply serves organic farmers and gardeners nationwide and even overseas. Seven Springs Farm stocks a wide variety of organic products including fertilizers, micro-nutrients, pest controls, animal supplements, deer fencing, row covers and cover crop seed.
